Life always throws curveballs

31 Mar

Thankfully this curveball was a good one. Nee, not good, great! I had given up on ever owning anything on my own, thanks to my inability to manage money and my credit in my 20s (live and learn), but the desire to have my own piece of this earth was always in the back of my mind. You know how it is, that little “well *maybe* I’ll be able to…..one day.”

Ladies and gentlemen, that one day finally came!

I now own my very own piece of Texas. It’s desert. It’s going to be offgrid. And I love it. Try and take it from me, and I will throat punch you.

It was 110% unexpected. I hadn’t been back to West Texas since my Geography field school at University, but I always did love it down there (and seriously, it continuously amazes me how vastly different regions of this state can be). I’m grateful to Moeder for finding the property listing, and to my parents for being willing to drive down there with me. Never underestimate the knowledge your parents have, even if they do frustrate you sometimes. (Love you both!!)

I want to drive straight back down there, put fencing up and start building the house, but a) come on Jess, you don’t really know how to do either of those things, and b) you’re now on a 5yr plan to move down there (or you have to win the lottery first), so patience padawan.

I’ll end this with my favourite photo I took at the ghost town down there. See y’all with the next post!

Start of my Camino Gear

13 Mar

It’s starting to feel real!!

Over the weekend my friend A and I went shopping, and started out at REI. I had some hiking socks to pick up, and wanted to look at the backpacks, but I didn’t think that I would walk away with a backpack AND hiking poles! I had come to terms with not finding a backpack that I liked and that was comfortable, but even a continent away, the camino provides.

The backpack is the women’s REI co-op Trail 40 pack, in Medium (and the colour Graystone). It also comes in a Small, and in the colour Oregano. It’s really comfortable. The employee, who I asked many, many questions of, let me know they had bean bags in various weights to put in the packs, so I put in 2 5lb bean bags and walked around for a bit. Granted, I know it’s not the same as trekking through Spain for 6-8hrs at a time, but still….the shoulder straps didn’t dig in at all, and the pack stayed in place. Two pre-camino, pre-training thumbs up. Also, the zipper to the main compartment makes a u-shape (like a suitcase zipper), so there’s no having to dig in through strictly top-loading openings to get to the one item you hastily need, which has fallen to the very bottom. There’s room for a hydration bag, plenty of pockets, and room to hang items on the front, plus two side zip pockets on the hip straps (one on each side). Considering I’m only walking for a week, this backpack is more than perfect for me!

Now the hiking poles. I’ve been debating on getting some, but the more research I did, the more I leaned towards the affirmative. So after finding my pack, we turned to the next aisle and were overwhelmed with choices. And the cost! Holy hell, I didn’t realize two pieces of aluminum and some cork would cost so much. Then, like with the pack, the camino pre-provided. There was a clearance bucket with three sets of poles in it marked down to half the cost of the poles I currently had my eye on. So I tested them out, felt confident they would keep me upright, and added them to my purchase pile. (They’re the REI Co-op Traverse Print Power Lock Cork Trekking Poles – Pair in Antique Moss.) I also grabbed a pack of rubber walking tips for the poles, because I remembered camino alumni talking about the clickity clacks of the metal tips hitting the pavement early in the morning when leaving town. Don’t want to be disrespectful to the townspeople trying to sleep while we all leave at the crack of dawn.

I got some other odds and ends, but I’ll include all those when I do my packing post in late September. Next up, comfortable hiking boots, because my current ones will make my feet curl up and die before the end of day one (That’s a visual for you, eh?).

If you stuck around to this point of the entry then I give you props. Thanks for reading, and Ultreia!

Cali Vacation – Day 1

14 Feb

I should call this the day I stayed up 21hrs, smh. (and Day 2 looks like it’ll be nearly the same)

Left for the airport at 345a, dropped my car off at the Parking Spot, shuttled to Terminal, and then waited in line at security for 45min. Never seen so many groups going anywhere in February. Wonder if they were all going cruising? Anyways…boring flight, made it to LA, and checked into the hotel. Blah blah blah lol.

This Hilton is nice!

The room is a lot bigger than the Marriott rooms, so that’s a plus (and it was cheaper, yay). There is no fridge which sucks, but we’ll make it work somehow.

Moving on. Day 1 was chill because I was the first one to LA. Katrina and Chris arrived at about noon. We met up, had lunch at Denny’s and caught up. After we parted ways, I went to the hotel, was hoping to meet up with an aunt, that didn’t work out, and by then I was nearly dead to the world. Stayed in the room, put on pjs, turned on the Olympics and eventually fell asleep.

I swear, this vacation will get more interesting lol. Promise!

Gallifrey One 2018

11 Feb

It’s that time of year again!

After taking 2017 off, I am returning for my 6th Gallifrey One! Huzzah! 😉

I’ll be meeting up with most of Team Wine Lords from Austin (Laura, Eric, and Mark), and it’ll be good to see other friends I haven’t seen in almost 2yrs! I can’t wait to see everyone 😊

Relaxation, family, friends, and geekery…….stay tuned. The adventure begins Tuesday!

Adventure is calling my name…

6 Jan

2018 is the beginning of a new time for me. As I have been inching closer and closer to 40 each year, I would think about all the things I still want to do in my life, and add them to my bucket list. Well, what’s the point of making a list if you aren’t going to complete some/most/all of the items on it?? Time to start ticking those boxes and living life!

Life has been…..unhealthy.

6 Jun

I didn’t even bother looking at when I last posted because I know it has been a long while. Life in Dallas has been interesting. I never particularly loved the DFW area, and I took a chance moving here, but haven’t been very happy. My depression and anxiety have gone through the roof, and the number of panic attacks I have had has gone up 15x over the previous 3 years. I know some of the cause, but as it is not an easy fix, I am having to learn how to deal with all 3 of those things to keep myself from going off the deep end.

If you know me, you know I don’t like doctors. I don’t like being given medicine to fix myself. I don’t like talking through what’s bugging me. I really don’t like that I can’t fix myself on my own. I have turned to meditating. Which ended up just turning into me hiding in my apartment every weekend to decompress from the world.

Was moving here worth what I am currently battling? In some ways, yes. In a lot more ways, HELL NO.

Do I regret my choice? Almost every day. But it was exactly that: my choice. So I have to deal with the fallout.

Gallifrey One 2015

23 Feb

If there’s one thing I look forward to every year, it’s the Doctor Who Con in LA, Gallifrey One. After the miserable last half of 2014, I was halfheartedly looking forward to my other “family reunion”. I honestly don’t go for the guests any more. I go to see all my friends from around the globe, and then  the guests are a bit of bonus.

Ignoring some drama, I arrived in LA the Wednesday prior to the convention and automatically felt relaxed. Nothing like being able to block out reality for a few days. Insert all the adventures of taking LA public transport to see the shuttle Endeavour at the California Science Center, to our Doctor Who cosplays mashed up with comic characters on Friday, to saying goodbye to everyone on Sunday….it was a pretty damn good time. Didn’t get to do everything I wanted, but saw most everyone I wanted to, so still a WIN. I’ll let some photos explain the trip. Ready for next year, and more tourist time in LA.

Why I’ve smiled lately…

5 Jul
I can’t put EVERYTHING in this list that has made me smile (keeping it PG lol), but here’s a small sample from the last month and a half (sorry it’s been so long!):

It’s two of my favorite animals in one photo! I need more cute photos like this 🙂

Spent Comicpalooza with two awesome friends. Shout outs to Molly and Mark! It was definitely an interesting blast, because FOUR DOCTORS! 😉

Speaking of Doctors……..

WP_004693

I was able to mark another Doctor off my list: the Fifth Doctor! He may not be my favorite Doctor, but I have found I absolutely adore Peter Davison ❤ Plus come on, this photo is awesome (mainly because we were all laughing as my wig had attacked his face at first)

WP_004731

Gotta love us Shafer gals 😉 Family embraces your weirdness (only because they are just as weird!)

Helped End Alzheimer’s on The Longest Day this year with my loves, Team Wine Lords. Always have a blast with these people.

And most recently, spent a long weekend with my parents celebrating their 35th Anniversary  ❤

Love you Moeder, love you Dad!

Our world has gotten a little darker

17 May

Sir Eduard Fens: Vader, Opa, Echtgenoot, Overgrootvader, Broer……passed away over night.

He was one of the strongest men in my life. Smart, loving, indomitable, and a bit quiet.

So many memories have been going through my mind since the news reached Texas that he was on a downward swing. They’ve been playing in my head like home videos. Then when Moeder rang me an hour ago and let me know that he passed, those home videos became snapshots. Stills. All movement ceased. My heart breaks a little more with each one that pops in my head.

I know the routine. “I’m glad he’s not in pain anymore.” or “His soul is in a better place now.” That’s all fine and dandy, but………

My heart goes out to Oma. Mij Moeder, Tante Lia, Oom Ed, Tante Patty.

Opa, we may cry over your passing, but know that these tears will be replaced by all the loving and fantastic memories we have of our time with you. ❤ ❤ ❤

Ik hou van jou.

jou kleindochter,

Yessica

You didn’t die just recently,
You died some time ago.
Although your body stayed a while,
And didn’t really know.

For you had got Alzheimer’s,
You failed to comprehend.
Your body went on living.
But your mind had reached its end.

So we’ve already said, “Goodbye”,
To the person that we knew.
The person that we truly loved,
The person that was, “You”.

And so we meet again today,
To toast your bodies end.
For it was true and faithful,
Until right at the end.

And so, when we remember,
We’ll think of all the rest.
We’ll concentrate on earlier,
And remember all the best.

For in the real scheme of things,
Your illness wasn’t long.
Compared to all the happiness,
You brought your whole life long.

We think of you as yesterday,
When you were fit and well.
And when we’re asked about you,
It’s those things that we’ll tell.

And so we meet in remembrance,
Of a mind so fit and true.
We’re here to pay our last respects
To say that, “We love you”.

So behind…

20 Apr
I know, I know….I’m way behind on the Doctor Who April Challenge. I swear I’ll catch up tonight after everyone is in bed.
Meanwhile, I finally got to play Doctor Who:2048 and I can say that I am glad I don’t have a computer at home 🙂

I decided to stop at this point, because Nine and Sixey. My two faves ❤
Other than that, Happy Easter, Happy 4/20, Happy Passover, Happy Sunday….whatever floats your boat.

The Ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston, is my Doctor and I love seeing photos of happy times on the set. I wish he would’ve enjoyed the working environment enough to stay a few more seasons, but I’m happy with what I’ve got and these behind-the-scene gems are fantastic <3.
Have a great Friday y’all!
